World Malaria Day Report OAUTHC, Ife, Nigeria

Posted on 14/5/12 by Dr BELLO Ibrahim Sebutu

It is with gratitude to all our sponsors and well-wishers that I present the report of the activities carried out by the Department of Family Medicine of the Obafemi Awolowo University teaching Hospital at the 2012 World Malaria day event which took place in Ife town and other villages in Osun State , Nigeria. It is an experience of a lifetime for all staff of our department who participated in all the various activities as it brings us closer to the local populace that are in need of our knowledge, assistance, expertise and material resources. It further convinces us of the possibility of reducing the burden of malaria in Osun state in particular and Nigeria in general via an integrated approach. Every aspect of the programme generate a lot of challenges, the radio and television programme brings us closer to the journalist and media houses. The use of the talking drum in Africa as an instrumenting of communication in our environment is self-convincing from the video clip uploaded in you tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTqxXAfOgW8(Accessed 14 May 2012). The opening ceremony which was attended by the honourable commissioner of health for Osun State Dr (Mrs) Temitope Ilori, the Laboratory test of children, pregnant women with RDTs, and the distribution of the LLINS and ACTs were landmark events that speaks of the possibility of a successful advocacy programme in African villages. The event activities provided us insight into a possible of a sustained malaria preventive programme and benefit of RDts in our primary care centres as important perquisite for malaria prevention. Using the primary care centres as vehicles for ACTs rather than medicine shops and quacks may proof to be a better option. The management of OAUTHC are looking forward to a wider coverage of the programme in the next coming year.
